Most Rev. Tunde Adeleye, the former Archbishop of Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity (Anglican Communion) Diocese of Calabar, has challenged Nigerians to ensure that the 2023 elections produce leaders that would be willing to restructure Nigeria.
The clergy said this in Calabar at the colloquium organised in his honour by the Bishop of Diocese of Calabar, The Rt. Rev. Nneoyi Egbe.
Speaking shortly after the lecture delivered by the Keynote Speaker, Most Rev. Blessing Enyindah, with the theme: “Leadership Challenge and National Rebirth: Solution from the Church”, Adeleye argued that the country is more of a unitarian government that is far from practising federalism.
“As elections are getting close, we want godly leaders, they should have the willingness to restructure this country. If we say this is a federal state, then it must be so. Nothing is federal in Nigeria as of today. Almost all powers are lodged in the central government. The lacuna is too obvious,” he stated.
In a related development, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, has urged members to pursue peace and reconciliation as tools in resolving conflicts in the church. He said good relationship with one another is vital for mission work and God’s kingdom, adding that peace must be pursued in the church.
He said this recently, during the Standing Committee of the Church on the progress in restoring peace in the troubled areas, disclosed that the crises in some of dioceses he inherited have been resolved, also warned that henceforth no diocese would be created out of quarrels, agitations and fights.
Good relationship is vital for mission work and the Kingdom of God. Jesus said that making peace with your neighbour, brothers and sisters is more preferred by God to your offerings and sacrifices. In this Decade of the Reign of God, it is the principles of God’s Kingdom that will guide us. Might is not right,” he said.
To further continue the work of reconciliation internally, the Anglican Head constituted a Standing Alternative Dispute Resolution Taskforce to work with those who have court cases affecting the church to withdraw all such cases from courts, intervene on behalf of the Church and resolve them.
He also appealed to the Bishops, the Clergy and members to cooperate and resolve their differences.
