We need to be conscious of how we spend our lifetime, because we are going to give account of our stewardship to God one day and it could be very soon.
“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12.
Time is an important factor in every man’s life. Thankfully, every man has the same measure of time. My father in the Lord, Pastor J. F. Odesola, in his book Making The Most Of Life said:
“Time is measurable as life is accountable. Making the most of life is very essential as believers for we shall give account of ourselves to our Maker and Master. We are merely stewards of life and time. God shall demand us to give account of how we managed His resources. While some people fail to finish, others do not even start at all! They fail to take a step in the eternal plan and purpose of God for their life.
“Making the most of life is your prerogative. It is up to you to either squander or invest your life. We all have equal seconds, minutes, and hours in a day and days in weeks and months in a year. What we do with it differs. Some people spend judiciously while others waste it. How you spend yours matter greatly especially as a believer who has an understanding of times and seasons like the men of Issachar.”
In essence, the true purpose of man on earth is to do the will of God. And the will of God is to worship Him in truth and spirit. Jesus Christ corroborated this when He said doing the will of God is his meat.
“Jesus saith unto them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” John 4:34.
It is also significant to know that whatever a man sows, he will reap both before leaving this world and hereafter. No man should therefore play God in the life of anyone because whatever anyone has acquired, be it wealth, position, power or fame, is given to him by God. And all these things are transient. It is even demanding because to whom much is given, much will be required.
I’m amazed when I see some people entrusted with some fragment of power or who are given the place of small authority, abuse the privilege due to their pride, arrogance and total disrespect to those they are placed over. They will surely account to God, and probably to man before they die for the misuse of the privilege they had.
Even though death terminates the existence of man, it is instructive to note that just as the children and family of a dead person inherit the property the dead had laboured for on earth, so also, they will share in the spiritual consequences of evil or good the person had done.
“The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.” Numbers 14:18
Quoting from Open Heavens, a devotional book written by my highly revered father in the Lord, the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E. A. Adeboye, “Life is a call to service. At the end of it God has set a day of reckoning when everyone must appear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive the reward of their stewardship, according to what they have done on earth, whether good or bad.”
Hence, it is important that we live this one life we have to live on earth to the glory of God in conscious awareness that we will account for every breath He has given us. Like David, let part of our daily prayer be: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

“Lord Jesus, I believe that you died to pay for my sins, and you rose from the dead, giving me victory over sin and death. I surrender to your Lordship over my life. Forgive my sins and cleanse me with your blood. Give me your Holy Spirit that I may live for you. Speak to me in the language that I’ll understand. And help me to hear and obey you promptly. Thank you, Lord, for answering, for I’ve prayed in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
