As the year winds up and you look forward to a New Year, the winding down period is not only to join the bandwagon, i.e., rush in making preparations for festivities, holidays, and reunions with families and distant relatives. It is a period to sit back and retrospect on how the year has fared. It is a period to take time out and with all sincerity, indulge in self-auditing, and reflect on the ups and downs experienced in the year, relationships, endeavours, spiritual life, businesses and other engagements. It is a time to take stock of what you set out to achieve during the year, how far you have gone in achieving it, and if little successes have been recorded, rework the plan to ensure fulfilment.
New Year resolution is a pathway to achieving purpose in life. It is a deliberate plan if strictly followed, to achieve destiny and live a fulfilled life.
There are personal resolutions, group resolutions and corporate resolutions. Whichever you are committed to, what is most important is self-determination, unity of purpose and sincere commitment to ensure that the resolutions are strictly adhered to and achieved.
Under group New Year resolution, there is the Family New Year resolution. This deals with the visibly outlined plans and vision of the family as an entity for the New Year. It is what a family sets out to achieve in the course of the New Year. The family New Year resolution serves as a compass that would guide the family all through the year in decision-making. For a realistic family New Year resolution, it is important that every member of the family is factored into the resolution. This is important because it goes a long way to secure and ensure the involvement of everyone in the family as a team.
Like any other resolution, a family New Year resolution must be achievable, realistic, measurable and time-bound. It can cover things like getting a better accommodation, getting a new car, relocating to a new environment, increasing savings and investments, school fees and school decisions for children. It can be mostly on how finances of the family would be managed all through the year. The family resolution can also involve how the family would organize its spiritual life in the coming year.
No matter what it is, it is important for the family to have a single document that agrees on what would be done and achieved in the coming year and all that would be avoided in the New Year. The main purpose of this to the family is that it ensures unity of purpose and if commitment is guaranteed, all members of the family look out for one another to ensure that every individual decision taken aligns with the overall family resolution.
Having a family New Year resolution should not be a lip-service commitment, it should be followed to the latter with achievable and realistic strategies.
