Monkeypox is not a new disease to Nigeria and the African continent but in 2022, it became a global pandemic after it spread to Europe and other continents across the world. The viral disease shares semblance with smallpox and it is most commonly associated with rodents.
The 2022 outbreak is the largest that ever happened outside the African continent. The virus has an incubation period of up to three weeks, and the illness lasts two to four weeks.
As at August, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported that a total of 172 Monkeypox infection and four deaths have been recorded so far in 2022 and that more than 50 percent of the recorded cases were among men. The NCDC did not reveal whether the men were those that engage in homosexuality or not but the World Health Organisation (WHO) claimed that the infection is mostly among men who have sex with men, especially in non-endemic countries.
In May, 2022, the World Health Organisation confirmed nearly 100 cases of the infection in more than 12 countries with the United Kingdom having the largest number of infections. In the United Kingdom, a large proportion of the cases diagnosed were among gay and bisexual men. Although the disease is spread to anyone notwithstanding the person’s sexual orientation.
Monkeypox is often caught through direct contact; immediately it gets to any community, there is the likelihood of its spread throughout the community among those who are in close contact with others. According to a medical practitioner in the UK who spoke about the high rate of infection in the network of gay and bisexual men, he said, “It just happens that the infection appears to have been introduced in the network of gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. And this is where we’re seeing most of the cases.”
A Technical Lead for the viral disease in WHO, Rosamund Lewis, said men who have sex with men are the group at the highest risk of infection. He said that about 99 per cent of cases are among men, and at least 95 per cent of those patients are men who have sex with men.
WHO had in July declared a global health emergency in response to the outbreak as cases rapidly increased while the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reported that 31,799 monkeypox cases have now been reported across 89 countries as of 12 August, 2022.
The rampart infection amongst homosexuals is an indication of God’s disapproval of sex that is against natural order. Romans 1:27-28 says, “Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.”
It is becoming clear that after these actors of unnatural sexual relations have refused to listen to the warning of God even when the Acute Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was rampart amongst homosexuals and killed most, God is through monkeypox sending another warning to this set of people.
How unfortunate it is that rather for countries, especially those with long history of Christianity in Europe, to categorically criminalize homosexualism, they legislate and encourage such acts on the flimsy basis of human rights.
To deal with them in His own way, God ensures that “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless,” Romans 1:29-31.
The evils and calamities bedevilling some parts of the world are not farfetched. They are God’s judgement and punishment for those that engage in homosexualism and all that encourages them. The earlier the world began to turn its back to such unholy act and delegislate such immoral act, the better for God’s judgement on the world to cease.
