God is holy. He is holiness personified and absolute in holiness.
Being holy means being set apart for God. It can be used for objects (a holy altar), time (a holy day), or person (a holy priest). All believers are set apart for God, and are therefore made holy (or sanctified, which has the same meaning). We see this for example in 1 Corinthians 6:11,“But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
At the same time, there is also a sense in which being made holy is not a one-time event but a continuing process. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says,“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely.” As we are living with God, we are growing in faith. More and more we are changed into the likeness of Jesus. More and more we display the fruit of the Holy Spirit. In that way, we are made holy. This process will only be complete when we are with God in heaven.
How can we therefore see God?
We are made to understand that His eyes “are too pure to look on evil”(Habakkuk 1:13), and He cannot tolerate evil.The face of God does not behold iniquity, therefore,to have access to the presence of God, you must be cleansed from your sins and desist from committing sin. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”1 John 1:9
He loves you but it is that sin that you harbour that separates you from Him. Apostle Paul also told the Thessalonians in 4:7 of his first letter to them that “for God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.” Sexual immorality and all other forms of impurity must be abandoned to have access to the God of mercy(Ephesians 5:3).
One good thing about being cleansed is that you will become an honourable vessel for God’s use. “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonourable, he will be a vessel for honourable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work,” 2 Timothy 2:21.
The way to see God is to be holy. Holy in and out. Your attitude, thoughts, speech and actions must exhibit holiness. One way to be holy is to be conscious of your activities and how you relate with people. Psalm 119:9 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.” The word of God should be the standard for you to lead your daily life. Anything short of that is not acceptable to Him. His word should guide your ways in life as it is written, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path,” Psalm 119:105.
Another way is to live in peace with all notwithstanding their religion, social status, creed or ethnic group. The world today is losing the virtue of peaceful coexistence. Apostle Paul in his letter to the Hebrews charged them to, “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord” Hebrew 12:14. Relating peacefully with your neighbour takes you closer to God. Jesus Himself confirmed this in Mathew 5:9 when He said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” What else can one ask for if not to be the child of the creator of heaven and earth?
No matter who he is, a child will not be denied access to his father, therefore as a child of God, you will have unfettered access to God.
