Text: Matthew 14:22-32
“And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, it is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.”
We are looking at the topic “You can walk on the water”. The kernel of this topic came from our scriptural reference where:
1. Disciples saw Jesus walking on water
2. They were afraid.
3. They did not know that it was Jesus.
4. Jesus then tried to allay their fears by identifying Himself.
5. Peter insisted that the master should ask him to meet Him on the water if it’s true that He was the one coming.
6. Jesus did as requested.
Peter walked on the water on two occasions.
First, when he was going to meet Jesus and second, when he was returning to the boat with Jesus after he had been rescued from sinking.
Doubtlessly Peter broke old records and put himself in a class by himself in this story.
Other disciples never knew what or how it felt to walk on the water even up until the end of their sojourn on earth. Such a life is described as an average life of some sort.
YOU TOO CAN WALK ON THE WATER.
Walking on water can be likened to performing a task that is humanly impossible.
To walk on water is to break new ground.
To walk on water is to set new record.
To walk on water is to reverse the irreversible.
To walk on water is to walk on the veracity of the infallible word of God.
YOU TOO CAN WALK ON THE WATER.
What is it that looks rather risky and unrealistic for which people can call you all sorts of names? Can I remind you a few facts?
A. There is no impossibility for our God. (Luke 1:37, Jeremiah 32:27).
B. All things are possible for anyone who ventures to believe. (Mark 9:23)
C. You cannot step up if you don’t step out. Faith is only proved by relevant action. Until Peter stepped out of the boat, water did not congeal under his feet.
D. What you are afraid of is even afraid of you much more. Psalm 18:44 says your voice is a source of terror to the enemy not to talk of your personal appearance.
YOU TOO CAN WALK ON THE WATER IF ONLY YOU DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. HOW?
1. Peter was bold in his request which is a form of prayer. Let us come boldly is the admonition of the scripture (Hebrews 4:16). You can also.
2. Peter made a big request as well. A very direct request Jesus couldn’t have turned down. Learn and decide to do likewise.
3. Peter desired to be like Jesus. Jesus Himself said the works He did we shall do and even greater works we shall do (John 14:12).
4. Peter stepped out in the presence of others not minding what they will say, unlike some people whose fear of what people will say is enough to paralyse them. Let them say whatever they want to say.
5. Finally, Peter prayed twice. First when he wanted to step out. Secondly when he was sinking. Never stop praying when things are going on well or and when things are not going on well. Constant prayer is the secret of constant victory.
